Gray's Field near Qwings in northern Calvert County has been i ncontinuous use for athletics and recreation since the 1930s. Now a local group - the Gray's Field foundation - has formed to raise money to be used for the preservation and renovation of the field.
Use of the land for athletics started when the Alvin Gray family converted part of their farm to a baseball field for the Owings Eagles, a semipro team that played in the Negro Leagues.
So far, the foundation officials said, more than a dozen individuals and companies have pldged contributions of $1,000 or more to the effort to upgrade the athletic field.
In addition to restoring the field, the group wants to obtain certification as a game field for baseball, lacrosse, and soccer. The plan also calls for developing picnic and pavilion facilities, as well as eventually contructing a museum about the history of Southern Maryland athletics.
